Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started crafting: I’m on the verge of turning 40 (less than two weeks and counting!) and I’ve been married to Marshall for almost 16 years. We have two beautiful and sassy little girls, Reese and Paige. I spend most days teaching fitness classes at our local gym and I love it. Helping people get healthy is a passion of mine! Before I became a mom I taught high school English for six years. I began scrapbooking back in 2006 just before Reese was born. My mother-in-law asked for my help with putting together a scrapbook of my husband’s baby pictures and I was instantly hooked! I went out and bought some scrapbooking kits and some deco scissors and I was ready to go. I’d say my style has changed drastically since then. Now I love getting messy, using my Cameo, my sewing machine, and lots of patterned papers and embellishments.

Favorite thing to create: Definitely layouts. I never get tired of working with photos and I love the 12 x 12 size.

What do you love about this hobby? I love that it allows me to be as creative as I want with no restrictions. And I love that I have met so many amazing people through scrapbooking! I love the community and the support and the fact that everyone has a different style. I love that one person’s layout can inspire others to create something they might not otherwise have made. I love sharing my work and seeing what others create.

5 Fun facts about yourself:
1. I have been in a Super Bowl Half-Time Show.
2. I’m a Harry Potter addict.
3. I have met seven actors from The Walking Dead.
4. I majored in Telecommunications in college and was a radio news anchor for the University of Florida (WRUF AM850).
5. Both me and my mom were Homecoming Queens.

Sunshine

My favorite techniques are creating unique backgrounds with mixed media products and incorporating die cuts into my layouts. This layout has both of those, plus my all-time favorite colors. I love these cloud die cuts and I used some American Crafts papers to back them with. I went with a black and white photo to really make it pop against the bright colors. I layered several die cuts together and popped them up to make everything more dimensional.

BG_Fabulous Flier

FABULOUS FLIER by Missy Whidden

This layout shows my love for color, patterned papers, die cuts, and watercolors. I love this photo of my husband tossing our daughter into the air, so I die cut a lot of butterflies in different patterns and scattered them across the page. I love how they mimic “flying” and really give the page a sense of movement and freedom. I also added in another favorite technique of mine… machine stitching.

Love You

I love the look of hand cut letters and I used several My Mind’s Eye papers to do that here. I made the letters the focus of the design and used my photo as one of the letters. I added some gesso and gelatos to the dark grey cardstock to make the letters pop a little more and to make it look a little “artsy.” I added small embellishments around the page as well as some tangled thread. That is yet another one of my favorite things.

Life is Good

I just love how this page turned out. It’s based on a sketch by Gina Lideros and the cut file was designed by her too. I used some Pink Paislee to back the open hexagons. I wanted to showcase this photo of me enjoying a fruity beverage on vacation and the colors, patterns, and embellishments were perfect. I added some watercolors around the page in a subtle way.

XOXO-1

XOXO by Missy Whidden

This layout was created using my Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pens. I used a heart cut file from The Cut Shoppe and drew the hearts. I used some watercolors and gelatos to color them. I used small photos of my daughter scattered around the page and then added just a handful of Crate Paper embellishments. I didn’t want to cover those awesome hearts!

Thank you so much for stopping by today and getting to know Missy a bit better!! Be sure to check out all of her other fabulous creations on her blog and instagram – links are at the top of this post. 🙂

See you next week for my technique feature!
