We saw this wonderful card and thought you might want to know how to make it. It is really pretty easy – scoring and folding!
Let’s get started!
Materials:
- 1 pc 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ Cardstock (for card base)
- 4 pcs 1-1/4″ square patterned paper
- 2 pcs 5-1/4″ x 1-1/4″ patterned paper
- 2 pcs 2-1/4″ x 1-1/4″ patterned paper
- 2 pcs 2-3/4″ x 2-1/4″ patterned paper
- 1 pc 2-1/4″ square patterned paper
- embellishments as desired
- Paper Trimmer
- Scoring Tool
- Ruler
Directions:
Start with the cardstock vertically (or portrait) in your paper trimmer.
Plunge the blade into the paper at 1-1/2″ from edge and 1-1/2″ from end. WARNING: Do not cut from the edge!
Lift the blade at 7″.
Move the cardstock to 4″ and make the same cut – plunge the blade into the paper at 1-1/2″ and lift the blade at 7″.
Next, with your scoring tool, lay the cardstock horizontal (landscape) against the edge. TIP: I put some brads into the slots at the score measurements to make it easier to see the lines (1-1/2″, 3″, 5-1/2″ and 7″.)
At 1-1/2″ score only to the cut line. TIP: Use a ruler to match a second score line below the cut line.
I marked the score lines in this photo to show you how the score lines should look.
At 3″, score all the way from the top to bottom. Again, I drew in the score line to show you how it should look.
At 5-1/2″ score all the way from the top to bottom.
Score the last line at 7″ from the top to the cut line and from the bottom to the cut line (use a ruler to make sure you stay on the same score line). These black lines represent how the score lines should look.
And here are the score lines in black and the cut lines in red:
The magic is all in the folding! The top and bottom of the card (above and below the red lines) are folded the same. The middle is different. TIP: Only fold on the score lines!
From the left, top and bottom panels only: valley fold on the first score lines.
On second score line, the top and bottom are mountain folds.
On the third score line, the top and bottom are valley folds.
For the last score line, both top and bottom are mountain folds. Did you see how I haven’t folded the middle yet!
For the middle, the folds are opposite of the panels above & below. The first middle score line is a is a valley fold. The second middle score line is a mountain fold. This is how it looks lying down.
This is a top down view with the card standing up. I hope you can see how it comes together.
One last thing: When the card is folded, it measures 5-1/2″ x 3-1/2″. To fold the card, gently push the two ends (left and right) towards each other. The shorter top and bottom panels will make an X and then flip over. It seems odd, but that’s how it works.
The cool part about this is that you can embellish off the ends of the card to add dimension to it!
Now comes the fun part! Add patterned paper to all the panels.
On the center left and right, overlap the 2-3/4″ x 2-1/4″ over the longer paper. In fact, these pieces can hang over the edges if you want!
