Technique Spotlight with Paige Evans: Hand Cut Letters

I am so excited to be here with the start of a new feature! Twice a month I will share a collection of layouts I’ve created featuring a certain technique – this first batch of layouts focuses on hand cut letters!

A DAUGHTER IS… by Paige Evans

I love using single collections to create my layouts and on this page I used a line by BasicGrey. To help the letters stand out even more from the background, I painted stripes of watercolor and then sewed each row of letters down to permanently attach them to the layout.

After hand cutting the letters from a Maggie Holmes/Crate Paper collection, I took some time to stitch through each letter with white thread and a sewing machine to add that home-spun look. I also adhered each letter with a bit of foam adhesive to make them stand out from the page.

PARIS IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA by Paige Evans

One way to make sure the letters are a somewhat consistent size is to first cut squares from the patterned papers and then cut into them to make the letters. There is no wrong or right way to cut the letters; you can try drawing them first with a pencil, or just freehand and eyeball it, which is what I usually do for the more “random” look.

Similar to watercoloring, I painted stripes of white to help the letters stand out from the background. As I was figuring out the placement of the letters, I made sure to leave room for a trio of photos.

A WONDERFUL WORLD by Paige Evans

On this layout I used a combination of a few different collections with similar color vibes to really make the colors pop! Instead of painting behind the letters I stitched them onto strips of white cardstock to help them stand out from the patterned paper background.
