Latest and Greatest: Mixed Media Canvas with Prima Marketing

Hi Everyone! It’s Pauline filling in for Becki today with a fun project using products from the Latest and Greatest Scrapbooking class featured at Stamp and Scrapbook Expo.  I love the look of the new Havana collection from Prima Marketing and one of the first things that drew me to the collection were the metallic copper highlights.

In addition to the pieces of 12 x 12 Havana Collection papers that students receive, a pad of journaling notecards is in the sampler pack as well.  I started out envisioning a scrapbook layout, but when I was looking through the journaling notecards I found one that spoke to me: “Don’t let your worries steal your confidence.”  Oftentimes I worry about not measuring up and this negative self-talk can erode my confidence and talk me out of doing something.

It’s a message I wish I’d followed earlier in life and one I wanted to share with my daughter as she is preparing to graduate college and make her way in the world.  I wanted to make something she would see often to remind her, so I opted for a canvas that she could hang up and see daily rather than a scrapbook layout.

I started with a mauve 8×8 canvas and sprayed it lightly with Art Anthology paint for a multi-colored effect.  I wanted to add a bit of color with my embellishments, so I also sprayed a white doily with a turquoise shade of paint.

I cut a 4 1/2″ x 8″ piece of the Scented Notes paper and tore it horizontally to create two strips, placing the turquoise side on the top of the canvas and the floral side on the bottom.  I secured the journaling card and cardstock strips to the canvas with Mod Podge.

Since the copper leaves were what originally drew me to the collection, I wanted to add an embellishment to highlight the copper.  Cutting a leaf vine on my Cricut, I ran it through my Xyron to add adhesive to one side.  I took Tonic copper gilding flakes and adhered them to the sticky side to create a copper leaf embellishment.

I used glue dots to adhere the copper leaf vine and some of the Havana flowers and my project was complete.

The journaling pad is full of wonderful sayings and has multiple cards with the same saying, so I think I’ll use the same supplies for a companion scrapbook layout where I can include a picture of my daughter and share my feelings behind the saying that inspired me.
