Designer Spotlight with Paige Evans

Paige-headerHey everyone! My name is Paige Evans and I am so excited to introduce you to a new feature called DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT! Every Wednesday I will highlight a favorite scrapbooker and get to know her better through a small questionnaire, a few of her favorite signature-style layouts, and, bonus, one of the layouts will be new, never-before-seen, and exclusive to this feature! I thought I’d start out by introducing and spotlighting myself, so here goes!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started scrapbooking: I’ve been scrapping since I was 16 (that was waaaay back in 2001!) and got my very first job at a scrapbooking store in Redmond, WA called Yesterdays. They didn’t even have an application, just took my name and phone number. I wonder what my life would be like now had I not walked into that store that fateful day because so much of my life has revolved around scrapbooking since then. I work from home as a mom by day and by night I manage the American Crafts blog and design team, am on the Studio Calico Contributing Team and the Ali Edwards Digital Creative Team, a blog contributor for Elle’s Studio, and a freelance scrapbooker for Amy Tangerine. I love guest designing and teaching scrapbooking workshops near and far. Basically, I LOVE scrapbooking! I’ve been married to Chris for 7 years and we have a 4-year-old son named Fox and a 2 1/2-year-old daughter named Jane. Currently we’re living on an Army base in Grafenwöhr, Germany. My husband is a dentist in the Army and we’re loving our adventures here and traveling as much and as often as we can.

Favorite thing to scrap: I love scrapping about Fox & Jane, their milestones, and cute photos of them. They’re my inspiration!

What do you love about scrapbooking? I love meeting new people who share this common interest and hobby. It’s especially fun to meet in real life at conferences and workshops!

5 fun facts about yourself:
1. I took AP Calculus in high school.
2. My favorite show (well, one of many!) is X-Files and we have a son named Fox because of the character Fox Mulder.
3. We used a have a LOT of animals (chinchillas, finches, a parrot, fish, rabbit, dog, cat). I think our neighbors thought we were a little nutso!
4. I know Morse Code.
5. I’ve calculated that I’ve eaten over 18,000 bowls of cereal in my life. Yup, I love cereal.

Here is the layout I created specifically for this feature:

For this exclusive layout I die cut a large ampersand from scrap cardstock, placed it over white cardstock, watercolored over the ampersand, removed the ampersand, and then stitched around the ampersand changing colors of floss where the watercolor changed colors. It took about an hour and a half to hand stitch but I love the soft look and texture it creates. Then I embellished with some Open Book by Maggie Holmes/Crate Paper goodies!

And here are four of my “signature style” layouts:

7th Anniversary by Paige Evans
7TH ANNIVERSARY by Paige Evans

I rolled patterned paper tubes and then adhered and cut them into a heart shape to hold a photo of me and my husband on our 7th anniversary spent in Korcula Croatia (with our kids and brother and his wife. 🙂 This layout was created for a series started by Cara Vincens about how there aren’t set rules in scrapbooking. My task was to show that layouts don’t need tons of journaling. Usually my layouts have very little journaling and I hope the “a picture is worth a thousand words” saying comes into play!

This layout was created for Studio Calico featuring one of their kits. One of my favorite techniques is to back cut files with patterned papers and that’s what I did here – I die cut three concentric circles and backed each shape with patterned paper trimmed by hand. Time consuming – yes – but I love the look!

I love when layouts come together really fast! This one only took about a half hour. After painting white over a busy background to tone it down, I paired four fabric frames with matching colored embellishments and added a couple of photos.

Cutting out letters by hand from patterned papers gives limitless options for long and creative titles.

Thank you so much for having me and I’ll be back every Wednesday to feature a special scrapbooker!

I love your style. I love to fussy cut. I know its a hurry-up world but crafting is my no-rush time. I do like pocket page scrapbooking though. I just add extras and intersperse 12×12 layouts. Thanks for the inspiration. I is nice to meet you and I look forward to your upcoming column.
