Freebie Friday – Chameleon Pens

You Made My Day card by Ilona Crouse

Freebie Friday with Jen Walker

Welcome back to Freebie Friday!

This week we are showcasing the Chameleon Color Tone Pens. These pens are an innovative alcohol-based marker that give you the ability to change the color tone of a each pen. There are 20 different colors available that produce over 100 different color tones. Each pen allows you to go from as light as a hint of tint to dark rich tones eliminating the need for hundreds of different colored pens.

So how does it work?

The team at Chameleon Pens have created lots of amazing videos to walk you through the process of using your first pen right up to and including various coloring tips and techniques. You can see their videos on their website and even more videos on their Vimeo channel.

We are excited to have Chameleon designers Annette Allen and Ilina Crouse join us today. Welcome Annette and Ilina! These ladies have created cards for us to share with you and full instructions to walk you through their design process.

Friends of Scrapbook Expo

Would you like to win the Chameleon Pens 5 Pen Earth Tones set?

Chameleon 5 pack Earth Tones

“Chameleon™ Color Tones Pens are a permanent alcohol ink pen system that enables the user to change the color tone of the ink so one pen produces multiple color tones! The internationally patented system creates simple, seamless blends that are perfect for giving depth and dimension to any artwork.

Ideal for all paper crafts, manga, graphic and fine art needs, the Chameleon Color Tones Pens are alcohol based, refillable and have replaceable nibs. The pens come in two parts: a mixing chamber and an alcohol based marker pen. The double-ended pen has a Japanese SuperSoft brush on one end and a Japanese bullet nib on the other. By inserting either nib into the mixing chamber and infusing with the colorless toning medium, color can be changed at the source. This unique system allows for working from a hint of a tint, to mid tones and back to the original color for seamless blends and colored gradation. Chameleon Color Tones Pens work with other alcohol based marker pens, are non-toxic, low odor and permanent on most surfaces.”

For your chance to win these amazing pens, leave a comment on this blog post telling us how long you have enjoyed paper crafting and how you got started. I can’t wait to hear your stories! The giveaway runs until 6pm EST on Thursday, March 19th.

Last week’s Freebie Friday post was sponsored by us, the Scrapbook Expo team. Thank you to everyone who commented on last week’s blog post! I enjoyed reading all of your comments about what you do to relax. I especially loved the comments where you mentioned that you don’t take a lot of time for yourself and my post helped you to realize that you need to. Everyone needs to take time for themselves even if it is only for a few minutes now and again. And, like many of you, some of my time ‘relaxing’ would stress other people out. I enjoy running with my kids and family even though it tires me out! I also enjoy a good book and a soak in the bath tub!

The lucky winner of the Scrapbook Expo Mystery Box giveaway is …

I have been scrapbooking and card making 14 years. I knew 1 person that scrapbooked and was curious. A scrapbook store opened in the town I lived. I took a a basic scrapbooking class that was basically a Creative Memories class. I still have the circle cutters but I haven’t used them in forever.

Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  2. Brenda Olvera says:

    These pens look wonderful.
I have been paper crafting for about 8 years. One day while I was in the break room at work a couple of colleagues had brought in some cards they made. I was intrigued. I started out making layouts because I feel it’s important for someone in the family to be the memory keeper. It wasn’t long before I ventured into card making as well.

I have been scrapbooking for about 20 years and have A LOT of stuff, but I have stayed away from stamping because I have never liked coloring it in. I would love to find markers that let me make beautiful items easily.

  10. Regina Furman says:

I’ve been paper crafting for about 30 years, but really only got serious about it 2 years ago. My high school home ec teacher opened my heart and mind to the possibilities, and I never forgot that! When my children were small we always had our art supplies out, and Mom made sure there was plenty of paper, scissors, glue, markers, paints and stickers (not to mention the glitter!). Somewhere along the way life and stress got in the way, and my creativity got buried. But now, since I am unable to work anymore, I have plenty of time to let myself imagine and create again! Thank you for the chance to win this fabulous prize!

I dream of designs all the time get up and make cards. When my nephew joined the army I made cards so I can send to him each week while he was at basic training. I tried these pens at the Orlando Expo and love them.

  15. barb macaskill says:

I started paper crafting when I was 12 and have been at it since! I am now going into my 35th year and don’t see myself stopping any time soon! It gives me sanity and a peace that nothing else can provide! I have chronic pain and there are days that the only thing that lessens it is losing myself in my crafts! I get so into creating that I am able to forget, if only for a little while, how much I hurt! I couldn’t survive without crafting!

  17. Debra Jacox says:

I’m not even sure how long I’ve been papercrafting! I would say at least 15 years. I’ve been crafting most of my life. Everything from sewing to basket making. Papercrafts have stayed with me the longest. I think I can blame an early Stampin’ Up party I drove an hour to go to and the fact that the art store I used to manage used to have a demonstrator come in every once in a while. I started with cardmaking and now do both cards and scrapbooking. Thank you for the opportunity to win these pens. I’ve been hesitating venturing into the alcohol pen world! This would be a good start.

I began scrapbooking in 2005 when my first child was born premature. I was struck by an urgent need to document her life. He always took lots of pictures of the family and created albums with detailed info on the picture backs – scrapbooking and journaling!

  24. Kathy Pollock says:

My mother was a card maker. She made all her own cards for almost 40yrs. She taught me a lot of what I know. She loved to color. 38. Jeannie Brown says:

I forgot the most important part, when and where I learned papercraft. I started papercraft in elementary school I suppose, but for scrapbooking and cardmaking I went to a D.O.T.S/Close To My Heart Party way back in the 90’s and fell in love. I got my kids started making cards right away and I started scrapbooking and card making. I have been sharing my knowledge with my friend because we both have back injuries and are unable to work. It was actually crazy because we were both going to doctors and didn’t know the other was also having trouble, and neither has the same issue. It can be very demeaning not to be able to work so for both of us this is a little bit of therapy and a little bit of growth. I have a full set of Tombow makers from those D.O.T.s days that still work, but this new alcohol marker technique is just calling to me, I would love to learn with Chameleon because I love how easily you can get so many different shades.

  39. Joybells M says:

This would be a great way to introduce beauty of this product to the cards I make for family, friends and co-workers. I have been making cards for 15 plus years, but lately because of having to start a new page life, I am looking forward to spending more time creating and blessing others.

  44. Julie Apodaca says:

I would say I have been crafting about 51 years (I am 53). I got started crafting with the help of my beautiful Mother. She was an artist and put a paintbrush in my hand (little as it was) as soon as I was able to hold it and somewhat understand what to do with it. Thus opening the door to a whole new world that is interesting, exciting, fun, never boring and my favorite hobby . . .crafting! Thank you Mom and the wonderful legacy you left me.

I have been scrapbooking since 2006, after going to a Creative Memories party. I have been hooked ever since!

  53. Shelley says:

I “entered” the world of scrapbooking/papercrafting kicking and screaming lol. I mean why would you spend all that money when you could just throw photos in a ready-made album?! It started about 8+ years ago needing a special anniversary gift for my parents 50th. I thought I’d send requests to friends and family for photos/letters/page contributions and just “throw them together” in an album. Well, I borrowed a few tools… cutters, shape-makers; got some supplies like paper and adhesive from the dollar store. A few more consumables from a friend who was with one of the home party paper companies… And the rest, as they say was history lol. Had to use those left-over supplies and needed tools to go with ’em . Geesh lol. Now I make all kinds of papercrafts, cards, 3D projects, decor, albums… 🙂

  54. Karla A. says:

WOW! I have been card making for almost 10 yrs. Can’t think of anything I would rather be doing. Thanks for the opportunity to win some of these great pens.

  55. Dawn Thiesen says:

My scrapbooking adventures started because I got a new camera, and with it I was taking so many photos, but not knowing what I should do with them. My daughter had just found this new past time of scrapbooking, and invited me to go with her to a “crop”. I was immediately hooked, and now had an outlet to be creative with all those photos on my camera. This was 15 years, and 5 grandchildren later, what a delightful ride it has been.

  56. Dee Ann Matthews says:

I’ve been stamping for almost 30 years on and off depending on family and jobs. Since I’ve retired I’m really getting to enjoy creating cards with various techniques. Thanks for the demo video of the Chamelon pens- I had heard of them but seeing is better! I would greating enjoy using them!

  59. Debby J says:

I have been card making for several years, first for just family and friends and then 3 years ago I learned about Opertion Write Home and I am now a faithful volunteer card maker for that organization and our troops. 61. Susan Ringo says:

I have been doing all kinds of Art since high school, even went to an art school when I lived in Houston, but really didn’t get into my crafts until about 10 years ago. I love doing all different things. I just watched the video on these pens and out of all the kinds of markers I have used, these have to be the coolest. I wish I had them back in school, I probably would have gotten straight A’s. 🙂 These pens look like they will be great for vintage items. Can’t wait to get one and see where it will take me.

  62. Charlena George says:

I have been papercrafting for 2 years . I live in a small town who stil has craft fairs. (There is one smallcraft store 20 minutes a way. Then bigger stores are 45 minutes away). One year, I decide to go. There I saw I met a lady who made cards and other papercrafts. I started talking to her and found out she did a card class once a month, went and was hooked. I have looked and looked at these pens on line! Would love to have a set.

  63. Sue MacGowan says:

I started about 30 years ago. My photos had been stored in those books with the glue and clear cover sheets. My pictures began to turn yellow and fall out of the books. So, I removed every picture, re-organized them chronologically, and began scrapbooking them using acid-free papers and glue. Scrapbooking supplies have become much more numerous since those early days!

  64. Msheipe says:

I have been scrap booking life events for about 7 years. It is my zen time in a very busy life. Last year I starting making cards. I love trying new techniques!

  65. Kelly Flaherty says:

I started making cards in 1990 and picked up scrapbooking in 2000 when my first grandchild was born. I also cross stitch, since 1977 and have dabbled in oil and acrylic painting since childhood. I love anything crafty that is hands-on, but the cardmakers today really knock my socks off! The imagination and talent of all of these people – wow, if these ladies and gentlemen could rule the world, wouldn’t it be a beautiful, and safe place!!!

  66. Barbara Hendron says:

I just retired after working over 30 years and being a single parent the majority of those years. It’s now my time to let my own inner child out to play. Winning these pens would be a great way to start building my “toy” supplies. Looking forward to meeting new people and learning new ways to.play at the Expo on Thursday. Can’t wait!

  67. Mona Armstrong says:

I have been papercrafting in one form or another for about 25 years. My mother had died & I was looking for a unique way to save my pictures h memories! A friend took me to a Creative Memories party & the rest is history!

  68. Jan Slater says:

I love anything to do with paper, pencil, marker, glue, embellishments, stamps, etc. I started making greeting cards about 3 years ago and keep looking for products and techniques that improve my cards. These markers are a great find!.

  69. Patti H says:

What a great IDEA!!! Instead of hunting around for many pens to create the “right” shading… they are all in one place! I would love to try that out!! (free is even better!!)

  70. Tammy Davis says:

These pens look like SO much fun. I have been crafting since I was about 4 (thanks to my wonderful big sister who made sure I had lots of exposure to crafts!). I have always been interested in photographs. 1993 was when I saw my first “home” type show demonstrating Creative Keepsakes. That was the point that I became aware of “Acid Free” and all of the other things to avoid with pictures. In 1996, I was at the local Wal-mart looking at photo albums. There was another lady there and for some reason I looked at her and commented that I wished I had never heard of acid free! 71. Ruth Harris says:

I love scrapbooking! I especially love making scrap books of my grand kids. However, as they grow their parents are taking less and less photo, and I find myself with time s when I have not photos to scrap. So I have begun to do more and more card making and using stamps which require coloring. I am dying to own a set of chameleon pens. They sound so versatile and cool.

Well…I was a totally addicted digital scrapbooker several years ago, for a good 5 or 6 years (at least) but life got busy and I stopped doing scrapbooking for the most part…just a little project here or there. I just started making cards…3-4 weeks ago when I got some of my sister-in-law’s paper stash after she died. I thought I’d just make a few and it rapidly snowballed to wanting to make them all the time. Granted I’m starting out slow doing any of the “cool” things, cause I have to build up my supplies on a fixed income…but I’m slowly starting to learn new things and eventually I’ll be making the really “cool” cards, with all my new toys! :-)) I’m just starting to learn to color my stamps…gotta use water color pencils or my memento ink right now as that’s all I have, but eventually I’ll get some sort of marker set. ;-))

I was hooked with HGTV when it was not only about buying and selling real state, but about crafting (I still like HGTV but I really miss the crafting side of it) and learn a lot about paper crafting from it. I have made most of my daughter’s birthday parties invitations. It is very nice when a mom that you just met tells you “You should make a business out of this”. It is my hobby, my relaxation, one of my passions.

I looked at it and ordered a bunch of stuff and Google everything I could to find out what to do. In my research I found the scrapbook expo and I have been going ever since. Thank you for this generous give away.

  109. Tammy Whitley says:

I started papercrafting about 6 years ago and never looked back. I moved through layouts to cards and now all kinds of mixed media. The way I got started was I was having lunch with my BFF and I saw this beautiful store and had to go see what was inside. To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement. I only bought a distresser by Heidi Swapp. I went back to the store 2-3 times s week for 4 years until it closed. It was my favorite place to be. I miss that store and all the great people that worked there!!! Anyway thanks for the chance to win these awesome pens. I have been wanting to get a few to try but was really nervous about it. After all the great videos, im ready!!!!

  110. Jennifer Leicht says:

My mom had the most beautiful stamps and she introduced me to embossing, back when there was only black, silver and gold embossing powder, and I instantly fell in love!! Now I have grown to have quite the stamp collection. But I have always continued to color to color. I’ve been thrilled that coloring has come into card making. I saw a couple videos on these pens when they were 1st launched and would love a new set to play with. Thank you for all the fun ideas and giveaways Jen!!!

  113. Shawn says:

My love for paper crafting goes all the way back to when I was a Girl Scout. I enjoyed all the paper crafts our Troop leaders shared with us to complete a badge or give as a gift to our parents. In college I tried my hand at calligraphy when making my own greeting cards. When I became a mom I expanded my paper crafting to include scrapbooking and mini albums and used the design and color techniques I had learned as a Wilton Cake Decorating Instructor. One way or another, I just have to create and craft regularly because of the childlike joy it gives me! Nowadays I find myself paper crafting while my college age daughter does homework- and when she has free time she joins me in making cards, etc. I love that crafting is something that is easily shared with others.

  114. Rhonda Goffinet says:

The girls love making everything their own, right down to coloring it themselves. I can’t begin to tell you how many colored pencils and ink and brushes we have. I started cardmaking about 18 years ago – one of my best friends decided to become a Stampin’ Up demonstrator and started a monthly club to generate sales/interest. She needed one more person to fill the club limit she had set, and asked me to join. Years later, I still love Stampin’ Up products but have a wide collection from suppliers everywhere, and love setting up “cardmaking weekends” with family members, we all get together and spend the whole weekend making cards, scrapbooking, or whatever someone decides they want to make.

  122. Linda S. in NE says:

I work full-time, so there’s never enough time to scrap, but I make sure to make time to make birthday cards, at least. My crafting friend and I just returned from the Scrapbook Expo in Orlando where we saw these amazing pens at work in a demo. Truly amazing! My friend bought a set of the Chameleons, but I have not gotten there yet since I just spent a fortune on the entire Spectrum Noir. However, I believe having both would be a huge ’embellishment’ to my tools. I would love to see what I can do using both Spectrum Noir and Chameleon together!!!

My sister-in-law introduced me to scrapbooking when I was pregnant with my son, now 17. So, about 18 years! I was hooked from the very beginning. Of course, my first album pages were horrible, but they still preserved the memories. My favorite page from my son’s first year was a once a month shot of him in the tub, private parts covered, of course! I got all 12 months on a double page spread, with simple embellishments. It was so exciting to see him grow from month to month. I always show this page to mom’s-to-be and encourage them scrapbook their child’s life. Scrapbooking helps you to remember all those little things that are so special more than video or phone pics could ever do.

About 30 years ago, me and a friend were intrigued by the cutesy rubber stamps we were seeing start to come out in the market. We both sold office supplies door to door at the time and we decided to open our own little rubber stamp business. I got all crafty at that point but there were no classes to be found in our area or instructions on how to create the beautiful cards we see today. Computers weren’t on the market yet so there was no Google. 🙂 The business dissolved and I lost interest for awhile. In the last few years, I started getting interested again and it has just taken off from there. Now I can’t get enough!

Wonderfully beautiful pens! I started scrapbooking and card making about 15 years ago when my husband retired from the USAF and I could finally settle down in one spot and the kids were out and away. Love card making and scrapping my photos from our 45 years of marriage. I make cards for every occasion and love new looks. This look is a keeper!

I’m 62 & always crafted but started papercrafting over 30 yrs ago & love it! A lady in Peru wanted to learn so I brought her supplies & had a craft day with her & others to help them learn & earn $ after the 8.0 quake in 200. They are still enjoying it. I’d love to win this set as coloring is my joy/relaxation!

I scrapbook every weekend, as well as everyday during the week. I have found it to be good therapy for me while dealing with the emotional turmoil of being a victim of crime. I have undergone counselling to also help, but scrapbooking has been my main outlet and saviour. I would like to wish everyone who enters Good Luck.

I have been scrapping since my son was a baby – I really wanted to keep those precious memories! I have found this hobby to be an endless source of pleasure and satisfaction – there is always something new to learn! Now I scrap pix of my grands, and while I wish sometimes my son’s pages were designed as well, I am also glad I have learned more and more so that I can give the memories their “due” .
