Technique Spotlight with Paige Evans: Hand Cut Letters

Paige-technique-header

I recently taught my very last class while living here in Germany (we are moving back to the United States in just 39 days!) and I want to share one of the layouts we made together there and also the process video so you can see how it came together!

This layout looks like it used a whole bunch of different patterned papers… but looks can be deceiving! I actually only used ONE single piece of patterned paper! It’s Paper 24 from my Oh My Heart collection with Pink Paislee which has 36 little patterned paper squares. I cut these individual patterned squares out and then hand cut my title from them – it doesn’t take very long when you’re not trying to be perfect, which is one of my scrapbook mantras: embrace the imperfections!

On a white cardstock background I painted six stripes of watercolors to match the six colors in the patterned papers and splashed white acrylic paint on top to tone down the colors a bit and create more texture. I sewed the letters on top and then embellished with the color-on-color technique.

I used a black & white photo since the colors didn’t quite jive with this color scheme, but once converted to b&w it matches anything! I adhered the photo at an angle and trimmed off the little bit of excess.

Here is a process video so you can watch how this layout came together!

I hope you are inspired to try hand cutting your own letters from patterned papers!
