Well, hello and happy Tuesday! Let me start out by asking you a question…
As a card maker, where do you tend to find or seek out inspiration? Other cards? Techniques you’ve seen that you want to try? Sketches? Originally, I was a scrapbooker before I became a card maker, so scrapbook layouts always tend to inspire me. I can always find an element (or two or three) from a layout that I’d love to try on a card! Let me show you how you can pull inspiration from them, too.

A few of the things that draw me to her work are the beautiful colors she uses, the light and airy feel, and most definitely the layering. I’ve always been a huge fan of layering; even if they are fairly flat layers, you can still get the dimensional feel by adding flatter embellishments or die cuts over the top of other elements. Or the whole overall design (layout) can be very inspirational as well, like she did here with the three sections of watercoloring with pretty things over the top. That is what inspired me the MOST!
On my card, I used a similar watercolor look in the background by painting with red, yellow, and teal watercolor paints, then I cut three small frames to layer over the top with the Framed Out #1 die. I loved the butterfly in the above layout, but I vowed to make more birthday cards lately, so I decided to go with stars instead. I also added the red twine instead of the kraft colored twine around the center frame to add a bit more color and energy to the birthday card.
The center frame is popped up slightly with dimensional adhesive while the left and right frames are flat. I added a die cut word “party” over the top, cut out with my Phrase Play #12 die. “It’s your big day!” is stamped with Phrase Play #11 stamps. Last, a few vellum and cardstock stars were cut out with the Star Gazer die.
